Removal & Installation of the Water Cooled Off Gas Radiation Shaft

The Project included planning / scheduling and providing supervision, structural mechanical and rigging resources.

In 2008, IMG were asked to plan and execute the removal and re-installation of a water cooled Radiation Off Gas Shaft.  This shaft was installed originally as largely one piece in 1984 and was installed before the building was completed allowing for easy access for cranage to lift into place.

The challenge was to come up with an innovative way to remove and install and to achieve this in a very tight shutdown period.  With the aid of 3D technology we were able to innovate a plan to remove the shaft in two pieces.  This technology also provided us the necessary information to modify the building structure accordingly.

The project duration was 8 months in a running plant carrying out building structural modifications, installing a purpose built overhead gantry crane in the top of the building which allowed four points of travel.  We also installed flanges in all water feeds.  This planning provided a safe, structured and on-time plan to meet the tight shutdown period.

The shutdown period went without issue and the project was completed ahead of schedule.  This lift was nominated for the National Heavy Lift Award 2010 and subsequently won.
